History of Mulberry Health & Retirement Community

"Mulberry Health & Retirement Community
continues to be a vital part of Mulberry
and the surrounding area."

History of MHRC

From humble beginnings in a schoolgirls' dormitory, Mulberry Health and Retirement Community has evolved into a modern facility providing a full continuum of care to hundreds of area residents for nearly 75 years.

As a joint venture of the Indiana , Michigan , and Ohio Synods of the United Lutheran Church in , Mulberry Lutheran Home was established in 1930 with the mission of providing housing for area residents. First located in a building formerly used as the girls' dormitory for Weidner University , the facility grew to include the main building of the Weidner Institute.

After many years of serving the people of Clinton County from aging structures, it was decided to erect a new facility to meet the current healthcare needs of area residents. In 1975 ground was broken for the construction of the present building. Residents were transferred from the old building into the new structure on March 1, 1977. It was named Augsburg Village . In 1993 a new addition was added on to the existing structure. The addition was capable of providing housing for 56 additional residents.

In 1988 construction began on independent housing units on the property to the east of the facility. Construction on these units would continue for the next 10 years. Currently, 38 cottages serve the needs of senior citizens who seek independent living.

After 72 years of serving area residents Mulberry Lutheran Home was sold to Healthcare Associates of Indiana in August 2002. The facility was renamed Mulberry Health & Retirement Community (MHRC) where a full continuum of healthcare tradition continues. In 2003, the building underwent a massive $1 million remodel.

The current 172-bed nursing facility provides skilled nursing care, intermediate nursing care, assisted living, short-term respite stays and in-patient and outpatient therapy on a beautifully landscaped 100-acre campus. In

The facility is also home to "The Lighthouse," a unit dedicated to the care and treatment of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. This completely remodeled wing features a homelike setting and programming targeting their individual needs.

Reclaim, our special rehabilitation unit, is geared to help patients make the transition from hospital to home. These beautifully decorated rehabilitation studio suites feature all the comforts of home, while allowing residents to actively participate in their rehabilitation through in-house occupational and physical therapies in our state-of the-heart rehab gym. This gym is also home to our outpatient therapy services.

Also housed on the MHRC campus is Mulberry Community Health Services, a home health agency servicing Clinton, Tippecanoe and Carroll counties with skilled nursing care, therapy and homemaking assistance.

Rooted in rich tradition and reaching out to a promising future, Mulberry Health and Retirement Community continually strives to "make a difference" in the lives of area senior citizens.
