Founded in 1930 out of the girl’s dormitory from Weidner University, the Mulberry Health and Retirement Community have evolved from humble beginnings to a full continuum care facility. MHRC began as a joint venture between the Indiana, Michigan and Ohio Synods of the United Lutheran Church to provide housing for area residents. After serving the community for many years, the mission of the Mulberry Lutheran Home was expanded to meet the healthcare needs of the area residents. In 1975 construction began for a larger facility called Augsburg Village. In 1993 a new addition was added on to the existing structure which facilitated housing for 56 additional residents.
Expansion continued in 1988 as construction began on building independent housing units to serve the needs of senior citizens who wanted to live an independent, condominium-like lifestyle. Situated on the same campus, the Cottages of Mulberry contain 38 garden homes.
After serving the community for 72 years, Mulberry Lutheran Home was sold to its current owners in 2002. Renamed Mulberry Health and Retirement Community (MHRC), the building underwent a massive million-dollar reconstruction to become a state-of-the-art continuing care facility. The current 159-bed nursing facility provides skilled nursing care, intermediate nursing care, assisted living, short-term respite care and in-patient and outpatient therapy.
The tradition and values that were established in 1930 are still alive and being practiced today, more than 80 years later. We take pride in the Mulberry community and are resolute in our mission to make a difference in the lives of the people we serve.
